April 26th update (Part one...more to follow later)

April 26th update (Part one...more to follow later)

Hi folks, sorry it's been a bit but we have been struggling with all sorts of roadblocks...but today we are pleased that some of them are lifted.

Roadblock #1. Well Fargo and the Insurance check for the barn.

Farmers quickly sent out barn check (~$27,000) to replace out $90,000 barn. Then, since Well Fargo holds the mortgage we had to send it to them to disburse to us. Almost three months later, we finally get a customer service rep who is obviously the only person who does her job there. Our main point of contact "Jane" (name changed) had us go through many hoops such as:

1. Wanted the Insurance report of the fire - 14 plus pages of it. It was stapled to the report she had in her hand. Once we informed her it was part of the report she had in her hands "duh...."

2. Then she wanted us to have the contractor fill out out all sorts of forms to fix the burned HOUSE. We informed her it was a barn and not a HOUSE. After several iterations, she figured out it was the BARN and not the house

3. She wanted us and the contractor to fill out numerous forms. We and the contractor did and faxed 4 copies to her, all over 2 week span. We and the contractor left message but no call back.

4. No response from her. This is going on two months. Numerous phone messages and promises of we are working on it

5. Finally get a hold of another person who reviews the files and says "you didn't send the faxed forms" told her to look in the files as it was faxed 4 times....she did and apparently no one bothered to check a box or something on their end. They just stuffed the faxed forms in our files and didn't do the procedures they were supposed to do on their end. This rep, named "Betty" assured us that she would expedite our files and we would get a response with 24 hours and a check within 5 days.

6. Ten days later and no check. Called Well Fargo, almost three months and no money to rebuild the barn. get a hold of "Anna".

7. Anna goes the extra miles and notes that procedures were not done, that Well Fargo had our check for months, meets with a supervisor, does great follow up and *OUR CHECK* is making it's way to our house. well, at least 1/3 of the check. They pay 1/3 before the build, 1/3 at halfway and the reminder when the job is done. She is also getting an inspector in place so he can do the inspections so we don't have to wait on that.

8. Anna has gone the extra step when all the other Customer Rep have plain not done their jobs, ignores us or lied. But we are getting the check, which is good since the Barn is going to be going up in about 2 weeks.

9. To bad the first two rep could not do they jobs and held up our check for months. For some reason I though Well Fargo had a great reputation on Cusotmer Service

Did I mention this check will cover about half of the cost of the barn? The barn will be over $44,000 and the insurance check is a little over half of that. we had to pull $$ out of retirement to help pay for the barn. Oh well......

Warning: be sure to look at your policy for you outbuilding and make sure you do not have the standard 10% replacement policy if your outbuilding are worth more that 10% of your house. Talk to your agent and get the extra polisy. we thought we had it but we didn't and you can be sure we WILL have it when the barn is done!! I do want to say that Farmers was FAST in getting our replacement check out!!!

Part Two to follow later: Farmer Insurance saga on the Personal Contents (Sigh)
Part Three: Getting the Barn permit (double sign)
Part Four: New arrival- lambs (yeah!!)

March 7th, Update

OK so we picked a barn builder- Ark Custom Builder- they do nice work,. We selected at 60' x 40' barn, post type of barn with tongue and groove stall....otherwise really bare. Since the Insurance only gave us about $27,000 for a $90,000 barn, we had to get a barn with the insurance amount...but hey, we are at least going in the right direction. Hopefully it will be up in 2.5-3 months and we are on the fast track permits since the original barn was destroyed by fire.
Getty (spouse) is going to pick the color since the color I like (purple) would make him cringe and beside, he is a house painter and does nice house and he does this for a living. I think he will not pick purple though.....

Next item is a double-wide mobile home that will be the replacement for the music studio., This will be next to the barn. It will also serve as storage too.
Anyone know where we can get a decent doublewide and have it move here in May or later? After that is done, then I will arrange my dog kennels/shelters so then almost everything will be done- or close to it. If anyone have decent kennels, available, we need 2 more kennels, 4 dog igloos and a couple of more large crates.

We had three rigs that need to be donated to some good cause. A Mazda Navajo that the left front panel was burned and the tire, any one want it? A Small Nissan pickup with the from part partially burned (panels and hood) is yours if you want it. I think both need new panels, hoods and maybe battery, otherwise the rest of them are just fine. They are just, just let us know. We have a Subaru Legacy that just got a rebuilt tranny and 4 new tires (less than 500 miles on tranny and 100 miles on tires), the back is burned but the tranny, engine, tires etc are all ok. Since we just spent $3000 for the tranny/tires, we would like to sell it for $300. Since I lost my commuter car, I will need to get another commuter car....anyone have one for sale? Good gas mileage and low price?

We are putting up a Thank You list of people on the main website (probably in a week)...and trying to update with pixs as we go along. I still have to add more to the blog but just wanted people to get an idea of what is going on now. We are going to submit our claim to the Insurance...they gave us an estimate of they thought the value was and we are going to counter with our claim......as this tale unfolds we will keep you posted....especially on what they say on our claim.

You know, having Specialized Construction come over and removing the blackened mess and putting clean, fresh gravel has made a world of difference...it make it so less depressing...instead of waking up to smoky smell and seeing the ugly black scar...it looks like a big gravel pad and smell clean. Even when it rains it doesn't smell like smoky crap. Just that in it's self have made the healing go better.

Speaking of healing....having people reach out and help us by hugs, emails/calls, fund raising, donations, care packages, loan of a commuter car, and so forth has made the healing go so much faster, the heartache less painful and the new growth in our life be much smoother.....you always read in the news about bad things, bad people and how people don't care...but having this fire has brought out true human kindness and I know that God will be blessed by these people as they are a true representation of compassion and love and what he speaks about.

That’s all for now and thanks to all of you and love to all of you. Extra thanks to Amy, Jeff, Erin, Audrey, Jeff and Katya, the herding gang - who are my support during this!! Tony and MaryAnn….the chefs. Nelson, the tireless brother. Without your help, this would have been a much rougher ride.

More soon

Update (President's Day)

Today was a day off of work, so it was back to the farm. =)

The sheep seem to be not quite so stressed out now that the shed is up and their back in their own field. It was nice to see them just hanging out and being sheep finally; getting back to a regular schedule.

A really nice couple donated a ton of really nice Alfalfa. I'm horrid with names, so i'm not going to risk messing it up, but they know who they are. =) They own a cafe north of George. i'll look up the name. I've been there a few times and it's great home cooking! I just have a cruddy memory!!

The hay shed for above mentioned alfalfa is also v. close to completed. Yeah to the Aussie People!!! They'll be finishing up next weekend and we'd love to have a few skilled laborers come out. And anyone who's willing to share their nail guns, we'll hug you for it!

Diane and I have been talking alot about baby steps. These don't make a new farm, but regrading the old barn, putting up a new lambing shed & hay shelters are just that; baby steps. But they're so important.

The work party from the 18th was cancelled, but we're thinking that we'll have a 10 person group working in the middle of March.

Friday, Feb 17th. 2006

Well it’s another Friday!!

My name is Jeff Boone and I am the
“Webmaster” of Diane and Getty’s website.

No words that I can put down can even come
Close to Expressing my thanks to everyone involved
In the Barn Fire effort, but I will try…..THANK YOU!!

Help has been coming in at a good rate and
Progress is being made on rebuilding effort. As Diane has
Said in her last few entries, the lambing shed is done and
This weekend we are going to build a hay shed. A gentleman that
Diane knows is going to lead us in our efforts. Bob is a journeyman
Carpenter and we will all be following him. I am going to be the skill saw
Man and it has been a few years since I have run one, so I hope Monday
I come out of it with all ten fingers!!!

Diane has allowed me to take one on her dogs, Ray
In for a few weeks, after the fire, and he is such a joy to have
Here in the house. Ray has become a play-mate to my dog
Buck. Today, for my birthday I went to PetSmart and got the
“Boyz” a rope toy. Their new favorite game is tug-o-war
And the small rope toy I have lasted about 30 minutes!!

Since I don’t want to leave Ray in the house when I am at
work, and leaving him outdoors is not an option, I take Ray
to work with me. Diane lent me a kennel and I leave him in it
for 2 hours at a stretch and during my break time, we go for a
walk. With the cold weather we have been enduring, the office
staff has graciously puppy-sat him in the office. There are
three words to describe Ray, “EVERBODY LOVES RAYMOND!!”

Today, as I was in PetSmart, I took Ray in the store with
Me and struck up a conversation with a few people in the store.
I was asked where I got Ray and I asked them if they heard about
The barn fire in Carnation. Eyebrows went up and everyone said “yes”.
I told the whole story AGAIN. The people wanted to know about
“That really big dog” and how he was doing. Soon I was being
Surrounded by people wanting to know!! I filled them all in
And directed them to the website if they wanted to help. I felt like a
Salesman, but what the hell, if it helps, so what.

In the few days after the fire, when I got the website up
And running, we were getting about 400 hits a day and it was
So cool to see all of the people checking it out. The article in
The Seattle Times and the media coverage on KING TV sure
Helped!! See: http://www.jeffboone.com/jeffs_website_007.htm
For the stories.

Last weekend was the Charity Dog Trial benefiting
The Diane Pagel-Jeff Freeman Barn Fire. The good
People at Fido’s put on a great event and I’m sure I
Speak for Diane and Jeff, a special thanks to all who
Participated. And thanks again to Fido’s for donating
Much needed bails of field grass.

Feb 8th update

Time sure flies by.

On Friday, Kevin Jones of Specialized Construction Services LLC, stopped by and took a look at the site. His wife, Dr. Victoria Jones is my eye vet and had heard about our plight. They offered to bring gravel in and level the site for the barn. I am truly blessed by their generosity. Kevin, the kind person that he is, volunteered to donate his time, equipment and get us gravel for the site. We are so overwhelmed by their kindness. I hope in my lifetime I can do a act as kind as he has done for me for someone else in need. Victoria is one special person too!!

This last weekend the FAA guys came out and worked on the shed. They picked the windiest day of the year ...wind gust were about 40-60 and the roof was flying off and it was bone cold. The American Flag was at full sail and whitecaps were on the ponds....and the guys hung in there (or should I say hung on) and got all but the last pieces of the roof on but darkness set in and they had to quit. The crew was Varun, Walter, Kelly, Steve - all from last week and Ken Frey and Nick Kusz made the first time appearance this weekend. Then we had the debris removal crew which was of Amy (donation coordinator and a blessing!!), Jeff Boone (web master), Nancy and Scott Burke (Aussie rescue) and my dear brother Nelson.

The FAA guys were working on the shed and the debris gang covered the 80 x 70 ft of burnt barn area and picked up glass and metal. The fire had burned everything to the ground but we managed to find tons of stuff, enough to make a 10 x 8 ft pile of garbage. We sure smelled really bad after this work!! Like, you didn't want to be downwind of us. One would think that picking up burnt stuff would not be a dirty job, but couple that with burnt dirt, ashes, charred wood, burnt organic material, soft mud and then a rain and wind....is a prime recipe for smelly, stinky people.

Lucky for us, the chefs up at the house (Tony and MaryAnn- again for the 2nd weekend in a row), didn't say anything about our smelly attire!! The food was hot and fit the bill and soon we were full and happy and not to mention WARM!!!

The debris crew left late in the afternoon and the shed gang worked until darkness. All in all, it was a very busy day and we were tired after all of this.

Sunday was a day of rest. Erin, Amy and I watched the game and ate well. We had fun cheering for the Seahawks. So did the dogs!!

Today, Varun, Walter and Kelly came out after lunch and finished the shed. I appreciate that they did this, took time off from work to do this. This really means a lot. It was sunny and no wind. They finished the shed and it is one well built shed. Pictures will be on the main site soon. It needs a name and I have asked the guys to come up with a name for the shed. It will house the mother ewes and new lambs. I have the best job in the world to be working for the FAA and with the guys like these!!

Kevin Jones stopped by. His brother came out and leveled out the site. The gravel trucks brought loads of gravel and by evening it started to look so much nicer and cleaner. No more burnt, ugly smelly scar. He scraped the burnt ashes off in a pile, a put fresh clean gravel and now when I walk by I can see a new beginning. I feel so much better inside and the ache is going away.

Today is the Phoenix. Thank you Kevin Jones and Specialized Construction Services LLC for making this a new life.

Donations and Work Parties 2-3-06

So today is mail box day. I used to just swing by the post office once a week, but now it's becoming a 3x's a week trip. =)

The most amazing thing about being involved in the "donations" aspect is the number of complete strangers who have e-mailed me. It's so amazing and has completely restored my faith in good people.

So the work party this weekend is full. Nancy and hubby Scott have kindly donated their time. They will be helping me do some final clean up and set some fencing for the sheepies. Nancy is the fairy god-mother of the NW Aussie Rescue group and the person who helped me find my Simon. So as usual, I am in her debt. =)

The next work party will be the 18th of Feb. There isn't a task list yet, so i'm not sure how many hands we'll need. i have a feeling it will be a little more solid after this weekend. Once we get that down i'll be sending out notes.

A note on Hog-Fuel.

I'm having a heck of a time finding donations of Hog-Fuel. I am more than willing to pay fuel surcharge in exchange for free materials, or any other fun way to set this up. Also, if we can find multiple donators who are willing to part with less matieral; i'm game for that too. If anyone has connections in this matter, please let me know. AmyInez@juno.com

Jan 31 update

WOW, Joe Decker did a great job of removing the blackened scar that was left from the fire. Looks smooth but still has traces of smoke smell but that is to be expected. Joe did a 5 star service and I HIGHLY recommend him if you need any logging, excavating, clearing or that type of work. Thanks Joe and Nancy for your great community service. You are two great people. I know if I ever need any more work like this, they will be the people I will call.

It's been almost two weeks and we are trying to sort through everything now. I want to thank all the people who stepped up and helped us right after the fire. Jeff Boone who rushed over and helped and made sure the sheep had hay. Rocking E who generously donated alfalfa for the first few days to tide us over. Chris Haymond for taking my Clun Forest pregnant ewes until I could get a shelter built. Nelson, my brother and Mom who came and helped us on the day of the fire. Amy Bradley who stepped forth and taken the rein of coordinator for "barn fire" contact person. Becki, Chris, Claire who are putting a sheepdog benefit trial to help us. Jeff Roger and Katya, who have stepped in and helped with work. Tony and MaryAnn who have been there everyday for me. Varun, Walter, Steve, Kelly and the rest of the guys from the FAA who built a lambing shed for me. Jayna and Nate who brought supplies!! Audrey who brought sheep stuff....All the sheepdog folks, from Canada to California to Alabama to Wyoming. The Frisbee and music folks have been great....just everyone!!

I know that I have missed people but there has been tons of people who have helped us when we were dazed and numb. We will be starting a Thanks You page for all those poeple who have written, provided a shoulder to cry on, helped and so forth!!! We thank you all!!

Now that I am not so dazed but still numb, Jeff and I are amazed at the people who have helped in so many ways. We thanks each and everyone of you for your kindness.

Next step is a work party this Saturday. We also need to get gravel so if anyone has a good contact for gravel drop Amy a line. Her email is on the website. We also need to put up fencing where the barn burned down so the sheep can go into their normal pasture. Right now, they are with the horses and need to have their pasture back.

OK, so the plan is gravel ASAP and a work party. We figure there will be several work parties. We will keep you posted on these. We have called barn building folks and hope to see some plans soon. With out limited budget we will see what we can get.

That's it for today...more in a day or two. We are blessed to have friends like y'all!!
Diane~
